Sustainable Regional Plan

On Friday workshop at conference Room in Town Hall, participants put on the table the fact that Auroville Township, Viluppuram, Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu and the districts of Puducherry are very closely connected to each other through natural resources, climate, historical links, culture, religion, language, tourism, trade or business, population and transportation. This tightly knit connection calls for a Regional Plan that would benefit this region not just in the urban areas but also the adjoining rural areas. Read more

Pondicherry Dump Update
Since as far back as 2005, a group of Aurovillians have taken up an environmental activist campaign with the Pondicherry garbage control. The Pondicherry dump, located just 3 km outside of Auroville, is a smouldering wasteland where nearly 350 tons of garbage are dumped each day. The dump, which often catches fire because of the lack of waste sorting, causes a thick, grey cloud of toxic smoke. For Auroville, this low combustion incineration causes especially serious health and environmental issues because of its proximity to the dump site. Read more

The LFA Sound Space

During the LFA (litter-free Auroville) campaign, AurovilleRadio was invited to participate in the exhibition room called stArt of Certitude's dome. We took this opportunity to produce a sound in order toawaken people's awareness of noise pollution. The manner in which people began to listen was quite imaginative. With the participation of Newcomer Marc, organiser of the exhibition and a designer, we imagined a box where everybody could enter, listen to the sound and be totally cut off from outside, in  order to be fully focused on sounds. The result: a strange sort of soundproof cardboard box called “Sound Space”, a mysterious and darkened sound experience with a long waiting line attended mostly by kids..Read more

Impressions from the TrashionShow

One of the highlights from last Friday´s Litter Free Auroville was the amazing Trashionshow. The numerous talented designers attended a workshop one week before, where they got input, material and ideas how to create fashion out of trash. The result was simply outstanding: They transformed vinyl records, juice boxes, cassette tapes, bubblewrap, rice sacks, used fashion magazines and plastic bags into creations just designed for the catwalk. The audience felt like being in Paris, Milan or New York. Here are some impressions from the Trashionshow, featuring excerpts from the show itself, pictures and reactions from the audience. We can Make a Change

The 29^th of January was indeed a different Friday for Auroville. It started early in the morning with meditation, and after school the children and many adult Aurovilians collected litter along the roads... which all lead to Certitude where  the main action took place throughout the day. In a conversation with Chandra, Ribhu and Mira who were three of the many active facilitators for this day's events, some interesting facts were uncovered: the target is to create a team for a platform to create a change. It is ongoing, ideas and work, to reduce waste. Each of us can participate: the way we choose to acquire our food, and how we handle our waste, becoming aware that we can't just 'throw it away' as there is no 'away.' .

Uma of Upasana

Uma's enthusiasm for the work she does is contagious. Her eye ranges far afield; she speaks about Kapas and the cotton farmers and the plight of the weavers, she continues Tsunamika with the fisher ladies, and now the waste... Uma has woven the thread of creativity utilizing the contents of the unit's waste barrels, the goal zero waste. Upasana's employees, men and women of the villages, have successfully produced usable, unique items of beauty entirely of plastic, paper and cloth waste, caught by Uma's clarity and confidence.

Escape From Mt. Rubbish

Productions presented an epic theatrical gesture in conjunction with Litter Free Auroville last Friday at the Visitors' Centre. Johnny's began with a witty introduction of human history (which sadly managed to destroy so much of what exists.) With the substance we know as plastic, its use became misuse; Mother Nature became the target.  'Escape From Mt. Rubbish' was played with a cast of thirty children, who understand the well the context of Litter Free Auroville  and the campaign toward that end, which takes place on Friday 29. The audience had lots of laughter all the way through the play, and gave  the players a standing ovation at the end. The final message: avoid the use of plastic. .

Auroville: the low down on litter

“Something is coming”, “litter free Auroville”: these slogans, everyone has catch them on the huge banners present around Auroville. Well, time to break the mystery has come: Auroville does not so good at the level of solid waste. Action is needed and this is the goal of the NGO SOMA waste management, along with Ecoservice: organizing a big campaign on the 29th of January to bring awareness and to get things change. This is no longer a surprise, this day is supposed to be big, as big as the issue. Let's hear Gilian, from Ecoservice, presents her organization and the actual situation of Auroville toward waste, then Meera and Chandrah, coordinators of SOMA, talk about the day itself.

Deepen the question !

Recently, Australian deep-ecologist, writer and singer John Seed was in Auroville. The goal of his workshop called "The Council of All Beings" is to support the re-discovering of one's "ecological self". For AurovilleRadio, John describes a ritual, nowadays called process, of this workshop. He believes that the loss of ceremonies which can nurture our interconnectedness with nature is part of our problem. Deep ecology is based on the shifting away from the reality exclusively in terms of human values. That shift in consciousness is both, cognitive revolution and spiritual awakening.

Experts warn of return to 'back to basics' living 24 A new report, "Energy and Waste in an age of Excess" has just been released by the Energy Saving Trust. The report exposes how burgeoning levels of energy wastage could lead to stark lifestyle changes in as little as 15 years if we don't take action now Households in 2020 could be purged of their modern luxuries and forced to revert to simpler standards of living unless action is taken now to reduce escalating levels of carbon dioxide emissions, according to independent research commissioned by the Energy Saving Trust. A panel of experts have predicted two alternative scenarios for life in 2020 within the report - '2020 Futures: Energy and Waste in an Age of Excess'. The bleaker outlook predicts that without a concerted effort to curb our individual carbon dioxide emissions and create a more sustainable future, the home comforts, timesaving luxuries and freedoms we currently take for granted could become things of the past. In stark contrast, experts reveal that if we take positive action now to 'green-proof' our homes and create sustainable living spaces that cause minimal damage to the environment, an altogether more optimistic view of the future is within our grasp by 2020. Strict rationing - similar to post-war rationing of food supplies, our energy use could be heavily rationed, with dedicated time-slots allocated to households to carry out tasks requiring energy use to avoid any wastage Harsh punitive measures - areas in cities and suburbs where energy usage reach critical levels could see stringently forced energy laws and waste directives imposed. Energy Police with the power to issue penalties and fines for excessive energy consumption could be born. Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust, said; "The bleak picture of life in 2020 can be easily avoided just by taking small measures now to reduce excess levels of carbon emissions - one of the leading contributors to climate change. "We are optimistic that a step-change in the way we view our energy consumption in the home will see an energy-efficient future emerging, where environmentally hazardous homes are replaced with ecologically friendly ones and consumers recognise their own responsibility to create a sustainable environment for future generations. "Rather than having to rely on harsher measures to urge consumers to take the issue seriously, we are encouraging people to act now and start saving at least 20% of their carbon dioxide emissions. This target is easily achievable by adopting a mix of simple measures such as improving insulation, turning appliances off standby, installing energy saving lightbulbs and turning the thermostat down by just one degree."
